CULTISM IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES - Tribute to my friend and brother

February 19,2011 is one day i would never forget. I got back from school a day before to spend the weekend at home before returning back the following day. Was having breakfast that Saturday morning when my best friend called me and Id never forget his first words...he said "Guy, Deji don die ooo" we both knew a couple of Dejis but two stood out. One was a cool easy going and level headed person while the other was a wild cat, party animal and socialite whichever way you choose to view it. So when he said this my mind went straight to Deji the *wild cat* i screamed "Ahh so na so Deji go die...na party he go??? wetin do am?? Did he drink and drive???.

I had gone hysterical I kept mumbling words I was trying to fight back the tears but to no avail and all this while he was quiet and then when he finally spoke he said  "No its not that Deji ooo" i eased a sigh of relief, wiped my eyes, calmed my self down and then asked the normal question everybody in my position would have asked....Which Deji are you talking about? He paused again, took a deep breath and his next few words inspired this write up. He said I am talking about Deji Bq (that's what we called the other Deji) this time i couldn't scream....my heart literally melted i didnt want to believe what he just told me I argued with him for a while and then i asked for the cause of death he said he was shot in the chest. When he said this i just laughed because i thought it was one of his normal jokes. Deji was shot ke?? where and when did this happen?? how sure are you of what you are saying??? Those were the questions i asked him in quick succession. He said he had received calls from different people saying the same thing minutes before he called me.
At that point i decided to do my own findings and clarify the story before mourning someone who might probably not be dead but everybody i called seemed to have the same story it wasn't long before i logged on to twitter and that seemed to be the trending topic that day...R.I.P Deji. I immediately lost my appetite i started weeping uncontrollably and the only thing i could think of was how did Deji get himself killed?? Why was he shot?? Was it a trigger happy police man?? all these questions kept flashing through my head. It was two days later that i heard the full story... my guy was shot at a bar in iwaya, yaba while celebrating his cousins call to bar. Deji had already taken some drinks and couldn't take any more so he just rested his head on the table and waited for his cousin and his friends to finish up before leaving. The gunman came into the bar, corked his gun and tried to shoot at the guys at the bar but when his attempt failed he dashed outside to fix whatever was wrong with his weapon at this time everybody had dashed out already including Dejis cousin but he didn't leave without tapping him to leave the vicinity but i guess my friend was too slow to react as he had just woken up and didn't know what was happening and that was when the gunman came back inside and saw Deji still in his seat he thought he was calling his bluff, so he pulled his trigger and shot him at close range in his chest. When his cousin came back to look for him after the gunman had left, he found his lifeless body in his seat. I still couldn't understand....why would someone go to a bar and open fire?? Was Deji the target?? Well Deji was just an unlucky person who found himself at the right place at the wrong time....the gunman came for someone else and when he wasn't able to accomplish his mission, he used Deji as a scape goat.
The last time i saw him was Feb 13 at a friends dads birthday party....we talked and still argued football.Deji never told me he was going to die. I only knew him for two years but he turned out to be the nicest person i have met since i came into this world he was just too nice. We had good memories together and similarities too....we both supported Manchester United and drank same brand of beer and so bonding wasn't that difficult. Deji knew what he wanted in life, his mum was late and all he wanted to do was become successful and just make his father proud. All these dreams, hopes and ambition died with him when a good for nothing no future ambition individual took his life and this person would ask God for forgiveness tomorrow and He would have mercy on him.
Deji didn't deserve to die under any circumstance all these happened because CULTISM is still existent in our society.

SAY NO TO CULTISM TODAY YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW WHAT YOU JUST DID  BUT YOU JUST SAVED A LIFE OR EVEN LIVES AND MOST ESPECIALLY YOUR LIFE!!!!
R.I.P DEJI YOU ARE FOREVER IN MY HEART----I LOVE YOU BRO
